Movie Page

Between the movie and the book of Dead Poets Society there is much of a comparison. On the first hand, in the movie and novel when Todd had to read his poem out loud for Mr. Keating, there were some parts of the event that did not match up. For an example, The student who read the poem “the cat sat on the mat” that never happened in the book.“A yawp, for those of you who don’t know, is a loud cry or yell. Todd, I would like you to give us a demonstration of a barbaric yawp.”(kleinbaum, 74)Another example is in the book, Mr. Keating asked todd if he had wrote a poem, although in the movie, Todd said it himself that he hadn’t wrote a poem. Lastly, in the movie when Mr. Keating was making Todd make a barbaric yawp, Mr. Keating wrote on the black board, I sound my barbaric yawp over the rooftops of the world. In the book however, Mr. Keating wrote roofs of the world  instead of rooftops, this makes a difference because it was a specific quote from Walt Whitman, a famous poet. In conclusion, this event, was different in the book than it was in the movie.

Also,  the scene when Mr. Keating has the kids rip out the introduction in their poetry books was also written differently than it was acted out. In the movie, Mr. Keating stands up from his desk and says “rip it out, go on,  and rip it out.” Although, in the book, it says Mr. Keating walked around the class with the garbage bin and told them rip it out. “he grabbed the trash can and dramatically marched down the aisles, pausing for each boy to deposit the ripped page from his book.” (kleinbaum,39) although this quote supports the previous example, it can also support the next example. Mr. Keating only took out the garbage bin, then the students passed it around. Lastly, in the book it says the students were throwing their papers away as Mr. Mcallister walked in. This is also different in the movie, in the movie, Mr. Mcallister had just walked in as Mr. Keating had just picked up the garbage can.

In the end of the Novel, Mr. Keating was fired so the school had to find a new english teacher. Until they found a new one, Mr. Nolan was teaching the class, and was trying to find out where the students had learned up to in the poetry book. Mr. Keating Then walked in to pick up his “personals” and as Mr. Keating walked out, the class went into a silent salute on their desks led by todd. This scene was also different in both the movie and the book. In the movie, Todd stands up on his desk and says “oh captain my captain” although in the book he said it while he was sitting down, and then stood on the desk.“‘ Oh Captain! My Captain!’ Todd called out. Keating turned to look at Todd.” (kleinbaum,165)
